Creating a New Story
Work in Progress
This documentation is still being expanded and refined. Features, screenshots, and descriptions may change until Talescape's public release. If something is unclear or you need help, please ask on the official Talescape Discord. We're happy to clarify or update pages as needed.
Every project begins by creating a new story. This setup defines the basic parameters of your project and determines which tools are available in the editor. All settings can be changed later from Story Settings.
1. Opening the Create Dialog
From the dashboard, select Create new Story. This opens a modal where you can configure the initial details of your story.
2. Dream Type
Choose a Dream Type: this represents the mood or emotional tone of your story. It doesn't limit gameplay or features but helps categorize stories on the platform.
You can think of it as the overall atmosphere you want to convey. Dream Types can be changed later through Story Settings.
3. Story Type
Select a Story Type. This option determines which editor systems are active and how much complexity is shown. It’s meant to help Bards focus on what they actually need.
Available options:
- Visual Novel – Focused on branching dialogue, character portraits, and choices.
- Adventure – Includes inventory, items, and basic interaction systems.
- Custom – Enables all features; recommended for advanced users.
If you’re unsure, choose Custom. You can disable unused systems later as needed.
4. Title & Language
Enter your story title. The title must be unique across all published stories on Talescape.
Guidelines:
- Avoid names that are identical or confusingly similar to existing stories.
- Keep titles concise and easy to read (preferably under 60 characters).
- The internal story ID remains fixed, even if you rename your story later.
Select your story’s main language. Currently supported: English and German.
All text content (dialogues, descriptions, and warnings) is stored per language. Future versions will support multiple languages and translation tools directly within the editor.
6. Bard Tier Limit
The number of stories you can create is limited by your Bard Tier. Each tier grants a specific number of active story slots. If you reach your limit, you’ll need to archive or delete an existing story before creating a new one.
Contest submissions are excluded from this limit. You can always participate in contests, regardless of how many active stories you already have.
